What name were you known by in high school? (First and last name.)

Tommy Monfort

A little history, please . . .

Joined Navy February 1970, to avoid being drafted into Army. Stationed in Tennessee, California, Washington state, Hawaii, Philippines, Okinawa. Went to Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Viet Nam, Thailand, Diego Garcia in the middle of Indian Ocean, Iran, Guam, Midway Island. Got out in 1974, but, went back in the Navy in 1981, trained in aviation electronics. After 3+ years at NAS Jacksonville, I got out again in 1985 (wife did not want me to stay in because of possibly having to relocate every 3-4 years and being separated for months if deployed overseas or on an aircraft carrier and I was OK with that). Came back to Columbus and have been here most of that since.

Where did you go to school after Columbus High?

Some Columbus College, Navy schools for aircraft maintenance, ASW electronic system repair. About a year at CVCC and some advanced computer logic courses at Columbus Tech.

Where have you lived since high school?

Millington, TN (outside Memphis); Alameda, CA; Oak Harbor, WA (north of Seattle); Mountain View, CA (south of San Francisco); Olongapo City, Philippines (south of Manila); Ewa Beach, HI (island of Oahu west of Pearl Harbor); Naha, Okinawa; U-Tapao, Thailand; Jacksonville Beach, FL; Orange Park, FL

Looking back, what impact did your years at Columbus High have on your life?

The biggest impacts were applied to my rear by Coach Buntin with a wooden paddle, but, I never really applied myself at CHS, which I've always regretted.

Was there a teacher at Columbus High who influenced your life, either while you were at CHS or later? And why was he or she influential?

Ms. McCorlew managed to get my attention, but, that was toward the end of my senior year. I really liked her. She didn't talk down to you.

Aside from an influential teacher, did you have a favorite teacher at Columbus High? Why was he or she a favorite?

Even though I dropped Band my senior year, I got along pretty good with Mr. Kendrick and dropped in on him at CHS in '74-'75, after I got out of the Navy in '74. He had some problems adjusting to changes after '69-'70. Relaxed dress codes and more pressure for teachers to handle students more PC than previous. He had got into 'hot water' for how he had confronted a black male student, that had basically told him to go to Hell, when Mr. Kendrick stopped him outside the Band room for something he had done.

What was your favorite lunch at the CHS cafeteria?

I remember honey buns and Coca-Cola, then out to the 'Smoking Tree' until back to class.

Hey John. I guess I haven't seen you since sometime in the late '70's or early '80's. I think it was maybe a free concert at one of the parks in Atlanta. I was there visiting my brother Mark. Anyway, I ran across a set of 4 pictures from 5th grade at Wynnton, that included you, Beth Wade, Rick Flannagan and myself. Wynnton has a FB page for the school's alumni and history. Enjoy!
