Obituary for Stephen Thomas Hanson - Bellingham, WA  9/4/2009

Stephen T. Hanson, a long time resident of Bellingham, lost his battle with cancer on September 4th 2009 at the age of 58. Steve was born in Rice Lake, WI, on July 10th, 1951, the first of ten children to Donald and Lois Hanson. Steve enjoyed cooking and golfing and was an avid sports fan that dreamed of someday seeing the Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves face off in the World Series (although he wasn’t sure who he’d be rooting for). But it was family that Steve called his greatest asset, the cornerstone of his life. Spending time with his wife, his children, his rock “Miss Mother” and his many brothers and sisters is what Steve loved most.

Steve is survived by his wife, Jan, his children, Donald (Lisa) of San Clemente, CA, Douglas (Betzy) of Visalia, CA, Kellie (Scott) Anabel of Seattle, WA, Kristen Hanson of Bellingham, WA, Michele Hanson of Seattle, WA and Kathleen Hanson of Bellingham, WA, and one grandchild. Steve is also survived by his mother, Lois, of Fortville, IN, his siblings LindaMarie Hanson, Aurora CO, Kathleen Keirsey, Highland Falls, NY, Scott Hanson, Dickenson, ND, Carolyn Sillery, Indianapolis, IN, Jennifer Watso-Hanson, Latham, NY, Mary Alvarado, Fortville, IN, Edwin Hanson, Fredricksburg, VA, Amy Hanson, Tampa, FL, and Joseph Hanson, Fortville, IN, and too many friends to count.

A memorial service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 9th at 1:30pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, reception immediately to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Stephen’s name to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance 825 Eastlake Ave. E. Seattle, WA 98109. Please sign the Book of Memories, light a candle and leave your condolences for the family at www.JernsFuneralChapel.net

Just read, with great sadness, that our class lost Steve (Stephen Thomas) Hanson, September 4, 2009. I will always remember his sweet spirit and great sense of fun. As "military brats", we shared a bond and an understanding that needed no explanation. I loved hearing his stories about everyday events, like going to the P X , that were turned into adventures involving the transportation of his nine siblings! In fact, I believe the picture of the Drama Club showing us in, around and on top of, the Volkswagon bus, was the Hanson family car!  When I look back, I see a sweet, quietly handsome young man who was kind and considerate to everyone. I read that he had a wonderful, loving family and "too many friends to count"...I don't doubt either.

I had exactly the same thoughts about Steve's passing as Terri did. A sweet, smart, funny guy. Great smile and hilarious stories about his big family and their adventures. And, of course, there was the legendary VW Bus. I'm so glad it is featured in our 1969 Yearbook (page 68), with Terri and me up on top and Steve down by the passenger door ... keys probably in his hand.

We'll miss you, Steve.
